Tuesday, 26th September 2006 (3849 views) Golden Star, a mining company with gold interests in Ghana, has appointed a new vice president of sustainability.Dr Mark Thorpe has been appointed to the post in order to manage the company's health and safety operations for the company. The role will also see Dr Thorpe directing the firm's environmental and community affairs activities. The firm has been involved in sustainable practices in Ghana, where it created a community development endowment fund. The fund will ensure that one dollar is given to local communities for every ounce of gold that is produced in the area. Production at Golden Star has increased greatly of late – output of gold is expected to grow from 300,000 ounces this year to 500,000 ounces in 2007. The company has also made other appointments – Colin Belshaw as vice president of operations and Daniel Owiredu as vice president for Ghana. Golden Star aims to be "a part of the community in which it operates by maintaining and building strong relationships with other members of the community".
