Australian mining company Southern Gold has signed an agreement with the Cambodian government to undertake gold and base metals exploration over a 959 square-kilometre area in the south-east Asian country.

The company, which primarily mines gold, copper and nickel along with other base metals, will explore four tenements located within the Kratie and Mondulkiri provinces in the east of Cambodia.

Despite its intentions to widen its exploration focus, Southern Gold chairman Ric Horn said that it would not neglect its interests in Australia in order to widen its horizons.

"We plan an aggressive exploration program in Cambodia," he told The Age newspaper, "but without reducing activity on our Australian projects.

"Our exploration objective is the discovery of world-class deposits of gold and base metals of the magnitude of Chatree and Sepon in neighbouring Thailand and Laos."

Assay results from the new Cambodian properties have already been returned, with results of promising levels of gold (34 g/t), lead (20 per cent), zinc (18 per cent) and copper (three per cent).
