The opening of a new gold mine in Nevada's Battle Mountain has generated a fantastic sense of community spirit as local families celebrate the economic and social opportunities it will bring.

According to Mineweb, Newmont's Phoenix Mine is set to revitalise the area and create a large number of jobs for both current and future generations of residents.

The project is expected to produce some nine million ounces of gold, 900 million pounds of copper, and 7.5 million ounces of silver over the next 29 years, Mineweb says.

Battle Mountain has a population of just 2,500 people and has relied heavily on the mining industry since 1860 when the first gold and copper was found in the area.

The opening of the Phoenix mine will provide a further boost to employment and economic prosperity in the region, allowing local families to purchase new homes and send their children to college.

And because Phoenix is expected to have a mining life of up to 30 years, its opening has brought the community together as they celebrate the long term opportunities it will create for their children as well as themselves.
