Gold jewellery disappearance mysteryTuesday, 24th October 2006 (3874 views) Police in Australia are desperate to track down a haul of gold jewellery worth AUD$30,000 (£12,000).The golden ornaments have an intriguing story because they had previously been seized from a Nomads bike gang before being given to an auction house for a charity sale. However just as the jewellery was about to go under the hammer in New South Wales, the Cromwells auction house mysteriously closed. Matt Nolan, from the Newcastle police who were due to benefit from the sale, said: "Since Cromwells closed last month, we have no idea whether the jewellery has been auctioned or not. If it was auctioned, then we would like to know what happened to the money." One of the biggest gold heists in history took place in Britain in 1983 when an armed gang stole over £25 million of gold bullion from a warehouse near Heathrow airport. A group of six men overcame the guards and disabled electronic devices in order to steal 6,800 gold bars.
