Candian gold mining is enjoying many high-grade intersections of late.

One outstanding intersection was that reported by Wesdome gold mines at its project near Val d'Or in Quebec with values reaching over 51 grams of gold per tonne uncut.

The same company also has good fortune with its Eagle River mine in Ontario where a 7.2-metre strike gave readings of 69.94 grams of gold per tonne.

Paul Cregheur, president and chief executive of Wesdome, said: "Combined with favourable results from the 808 Zone released earlier this year, we are seeing a nice picture developing at relatively shallow depths in the west end of the mine."

Other feats in Canadian exploration include Comaplex Minerals' completion of its summer drill program in Nunavet. Its Meliadine West area returned one hole with 2.5 metres of 41 grams of gold per tonne.

Gold meets tourism too as the Canadian mining tycoon Peter Munk, who is chairman at Barrick Gold, has just bought an old ship repair yard with the agreement of the Montenegrin government. He will turn it into a tourist resort complete with a luxury yacht marina.
