A proposed gold mine in Yukon, British Columbia, has met with mixed support from local residents.

Many believe the gold mine project, which will be restarted in the defunct Skukum mine in Yukon's Wheaton River Valley, would have a positive effect on the local community and its economy.

Gold mining firm Tagish Lake Gold is aiming to complete the project, after having spent around C$3 million (£1.4 million) on the pre-feasibility phase, according to CBC News.

If it gets the green light, the project could provide huge employment and business opportunities for local residents, as well as infrastructure improvements for the rural community in the area.

Company president Robert Rodger explained to the news website: "We'll require hydro power out at the site, so a few more people will be able to access hydro power.

"Hopefully, we can persuade the government to fix the road up a bit."

Although only 12 workers are currently on site, the firm hopes to employ up to 100 people, should the mine open as planned in 2008.
