Local jewellers are set to benefit from the new silver and gold hallmarking centre to be established in the city of Chandigarh in India.

Some 53 new hallmarking centres are to be established across the country, after new rules by the ministry of consumer affairs affecting the hallmarking of gold and silver come into effect in January 2008.

The new hallmarking centres will be a scientific way of testing gold and silver, meaning the purity levels of articles can be ascertained.

Articles will then be hallmarked with five symbols; a BIS mark showing fineness, and a fineness number from a scale up to 1,000.

Other hallmarks include an identification stamp from where the jewellery had been assayed, the year of the marking and the mark of the BIS-certified manufacturer, according to the Express India website.

Hallmarking is currently in debate in India, where gold sales are high, especially around the festival of Diwali. Hallmarking is being rolled out across the country in an attempt to aid local jewellers and cut down on impure products.
