Angola plans new mining legislationThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Thursday, 23rd November 2006 (2134 views) Angolan authorities are hoping to encourage the mining industry by relaxing current legislation. The government is keen for the country to benefit from the advantages of a well-developed mining sector and believes that easing current guidelines could boost the local economy and encourage social reform. Official news agency Angola Press reports that deputy minister of geology and mining, Makenda Ambroise, believes new legislation could focus on how best to develop national interest and encourage development within Angola. One way to ensure that polices successfully do this is by examining how other counties have managed to balance mining interests with local needs. "Angola is peaceful and open to the world. So, we are gathering contributions to improve the current law, to facilitate the investment framework, appreciate a better protection of the environment and secure a better living for the population," explained Mr Ambroise. Angola has a number of large-scale natural gold resources and recent figures estimate that mining is responsible for around 12 per cent of the country's current GDP. However, further development of mining by international firms could boost government earning levels even further and bring about widespread reform of education and healthcare provision.
