Merrex has announced that its drilling programme at the Siribaya property in the west Mali gold belt, west Africa, has begun.

The rotary air blast programme will take place over an estimated 40,000 metres following on from previous exploration work at the site that has identified various geochemical anomalies of "significant" grades.

Initially, the work will focus on an area that has seen trenching already and a total of 19 drill lines of rotary air blast drill holes will be made at a depth of between 55 and 70 metres.

Previous pit sampling and trenching at Siribaya discovered 3.1 grams of gold per tonne over a distance of 35 metres which included 17 metres at five grams per tonne. And confirmation of a "major gold occurrence" was gained from saprolitic rocks in the area.

The mining company has established a presence in Mali, obtaining five permits along with its partner Touba mining in the country and land that accounts for some 700 square kilometres.
