The reopening of the Grass Valley gold mine could prove a significant boost for the local economy while providing as many as 3,200 fresh job opportunities in the area.

Grass Valley is a historic mining site that has been closed for a number of years. The Idaho-Maryland Mine Corporation is presently looking to secure approval to reopen the mine, reports The Union.

If the corporation's application is successful, the mine could be in operation within 18 months.

The Grass Valley workforce would be sourced from local areas, bringing sought-after jobs to the county and benefiting the local economy at large.

It is thought that some 200 employees would be required to fully staff the gold mine itself, with a further 3,000 jobs created indirectly through related operations.

Research carried out by CSU-Chico also suggests that these jobs would generate nearly $750 million each year, with annual contributions of $700,000 to Grass Valley city.
