Members from the South African Development Community (SADC) are to meet in Lusaka as part of the Mines 2006 conference.

The event being held in the capital city of Zambia will enable around 300 representatives to meet to discuss the direction of the mining industry as well as tackling any issues surrounding 100 different planned mining projects. So far, potential projects have emerged from Angola, South Africa, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo and new member Madagascar.

It is expected that developers and international investors will be able to examine the potential benefits of mining in helping the local community as well as new advances in technology to ensure minimal environmental impact of mining operations.

Mines 2006 is the fourth in a series of Sector Partnership Meetings (SPMs) being held as part of the EU-SADC Investment Promotion Programme (ESIPP). It is anticipated that some of the mining development projects involved in the three day event will be eligible to receive grant assistance from the ESIPP Programme.
