Gold mining company PT Freeport Indonesia is planning to discuss the disposal of old machinery at its plant in Mimika, Papua.

A number of local Amungme and Kamoro tribes people have called on PT Freeport Indonesia to consider updating the machinery and donating the existing equipment to the nearby communities.

August Kafiar, vice president of PT Freeport Indonesia, confirmed that the matter will be discussed, although he admitted that he had no authority to confirm that machinery could be donated to the local Elat Merah Community Cooperative, reports Timbo Interactive.

PT Freeport, an affiliate of Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold, remains committed to ensuring that all of its mining operations do not have a negative impact on the local community. Therefore, the company has undertaken a large scale social and environmental programme to ensure that local residents benefit from the mining of natural resources.

In particular, Freeport is keen to ensure ongoing social interaction with the local tribes people by establishing strong relationships as well as a further understanding of possible cultural conflicts.
