The shires of Boddington, Murray and Wandering in Western Australia are to receive a A$9 million (£3.6 million) government grant to help them cope with the population boom brought on by the expansion of a local gold mine.

The Boddington gold mine, which lies 80 miles southeast of Perth, is to be enlarged in order to mine the hard gold/copper ore that lies beneath depleted oxide pits at the site.

During its construction phase the expansion is expected to approximately 1,000 jobs, 650 of which will become permanent once then mine is in operation.

Most of the new staff and their families will be housed close to the mine, swelling the local population considerably.

As a result the state government has set aside $9 million in funding to help build homes, upgrade road drainage, improve waste management, develop industrial land, build community facilities in the area, according to the Western Australia Business News.

The Boddington Gold Mine expansion is expected to take two and a half years to construct, with production planned for late 2008 or early 2009. Once in operation it is expected to produce more than 11 million ounces of gold over 15 years.
