Newmont Gold Ghana has announced plans to help accommodate some 2,400 people in the country at a cost of over $14 million (£7.1 million).

The resettlement camp will come as part of the gold mining firm's Ahafo Resettlement Programme, which aims to construct some 400 houses to provide living space for thousands of people as compensation for relocation needs.

Farmers in the area are also being compensated by the gold company, as Steven Baffoe, the principal communications officer for Newmont Gold, explained that some $16 million has been earmarked for the 3,000 farmers affected by the new mine.

The farmers whose land fell within the mine's take area are set to receive monetary payments, but the company is also focusing on the community development programmes in the area.

Some of these projects include plans to help get people out of vulnerable situations, such as improving education, skills and even the working mentality of the locals – such as helping them to look beyond mining as their only source of employment and back into farming and large-scale agriculture.
