Barrick Gold has revealed plans to invest heavily in a number of Tanzanian community projects.

The mining company will spend a total of $15.6 million (£7.6 million) on initiatives in the Shinyanga region of the country as part of its social plans linked to its Bulyanhulu mine operation, reports the Tanzania Guardian.

The projects are likely to focus on developments linked to improving health, education, infrastructure and water supply in order to help support local communities, according to Barrick Gold's public relations manager Sauda Simba Kilumanga.

Barrick also plans to co-fund the running of a HIV/Aids voluntary testing centre in the area of Kakola in a bid to combat the growing number of people becoming HIV positive.

Since beginning mining operations in the Tanzania in 1999, the company has invested significantly in three districts surrounding the Bulyanhulu mine - Biharamulo, Kahama and Tarime and has developed strong links with local community leaders as well as creating a number of jobs for local residents.

It is hoped that the latest social initiatives will further strengthen this relationship and bring a wide range of benefits to the region.
