Thursday, 21st December 2006 (2073 views) Vancouver locals are set to benefit from a new Galore Creek gold mine in the region, according to company officials. It is estimated that Terrace will enjoy an economic boom following the development of the Galore Creek copper and gold mine north of the city, reports the Terrace Standard. Carl Gagnier of NovaGold Resources stressed that local businesses will be required to play a key role in the mine's supply system and therefore, the local economy will see a sharp increase in trade. In addition, the gold mine will also provide a number of new job opportunities for local residents, with the opening of an office in the nearby Smithers region already employing 12 people, with plans to increase staffing levels in the long run. "During construction we have to establish a number of temporary construction camps and we really needed a staging area to start from and chose Smithers as a jumping off point," explained Mr Gagnier. "When it comes to suppliers, I think you’ll find Terrace will be part of the supply chain," he added.
