A metals firm has outlined plans to extend a hydropower grid in British Columbia, Canada to a proposed mine site nearby.

Vancouver-based bcMetals has said that it plans to extend the BC Hydro power grid from the Meziadin Junction at Highway 37 North by 250km to the Red Chris gold and copper mine, just 18km south-east of Iskut, reports the Terrace Standard.

It is thought that the mine would have a working life of around 20 years but difficulty in establishing power has held back initial work at the site.

"We are a permitted mine and we’re ready to go but we need power," explained Ian Smith of bcMetals.

"We’re a mining company and we want to stay a mining company. We want the power for the mine. That’s all we want," he added in response to questions regarding whether other major users may wish to have a stake in the new power line.

The firm has been looking to begin work at the mine since it received approval for development at the site last year.
