Gold python phone sells for £81kThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Tuesday, 20th February 2007 (5126 views) Luxury mobile phone company Vertu have come up trumps with another elite model –this time featuring the bejewelled motif of a python wrapping itself around the handset. The Vertu Signature Cobra is a limited edition and just 26 models have been made so that it can remain a "phone for oligarchs". It features an 18 carat case made of pink gold which sparkles due to its pear-cut one carat diamond. The python's eyes are made with two blue sapphires while its body is decorated with 17 carat multicoloured sapphires. Design-wise, the snake was chosen because it is the symbol of the Boucheron jewellery house with whom Vertu has been collaborating on the phone's creation. Boucheron have been involved in designing luxurious gem-encrusted items for 150 years and have a workshop at Paris's Vandome Square. Just one handset has already been sold to a Russian customer at Vertu's boutiques in the country with a total of eight expected to be sold around the world. Each one costs €120,000 (£81,000). Other mobile phone manufacturers which sell golden phones include Nokia and Samsung.
