Friday, 23rd February 2007 (3104 views) A Canadian gold mining company has acquired a new permit to mine the precious metal in Mali.The junior exploration firm North Atlantic Resources has bought the option on a 185km-square region in southern Mali, meaning drilling and further exploration work can begin soon. The Kourouba project, located in the Koulikoro region in the south of the country, covers an area with a strike length of 14km, as part of the Birimian Yanfolila greenstone belt, according to recent reports. And the move brings North Atlantic Resources' collection of Malian gold prospects to eight, with 1,676 square km of mineral rights in the country. These include discoveries at the Kantela project, FT project and Massala project in the last five years, while also acquiring rights in nearby Niger. The FT deposit in particular is thought to contain some five million tonnes grading 1.0 grams of gold per tonne. And North Atlantic Resources admits its dealings in Mali are not over and it aims to acquire even more projects in 2007.
