NovaGold Resources has announced it has been given its Environmental Assessment Certificate from the Province of British Columbia for its Galore Creek project.

The gold mining company has finally completed the process which was initiated in 2004, in order to attain the environmental approval necessary for the construction, operation and closure of its gold mining project at Galore Creek.

In a statement to the Province, the Tahltan Central Council praised NovaGold, stating its belief that the gold mining firm should be granted the certificate.

It said: "The Tahltan believe that NovaGold provides the leadership, management and vision, in partnership with the Tahltan Nation, to make the Galore Creek project socially and environmentally sustainable."

The Tahltan added that NovaGold would be able to take mining "to the next level of social and environmental responsibility" in the area.

And the environmental certificate means that a range of project-based commitments made by the gold firm will be implemented, including the assessment of water treating options, the maintenance of fisheries and regional wildlife, and the improvement and maintenance of the dam and spillway in the area.
