The chief executive of the Bellhaven Copper & Gold group has described his pleasure at having achieved a "strategic mandate" at a prospective copper and gold project in Colombia.

Bellhaven has established a subsidiary arm known as Aurum Exploration, which will enable it to achieve progress in evaluating four projects in Colombia.

Julio Benedetti, president and chief executive of the group, said it was now in an "excellent position to leverage local expertise, technical knowledge and contacts to bring highly prospective properties from under-explored Colombia into our portfolio".

Mr Benedetti also explained how operating conditions in Colombia had improved significantly since 2002 following a reduction in mainly drug-related crime levels.

Historically based in Panama, the mineral exploration company possesses a portfolio of gold and copper properties in the republic.

The group believes that its experiences in Panama, a country bearing geographical similarities to Colombia, will enable a seamless transition of its operations.
