A celebratory gold coin has been launched as part of the Visions of Dubai series, featuring His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and other United Arab Emirates icons.

The first coin, which will feature Sheikh Mohammed and the Burj Al Arab on the reverse as a souvenir piece, was launched by the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), with the announcement made on the first day of the Dubai City of Gold conference in the city.

Speaking of the coin at the conference, Colin Griffith, executive director for gold and precious metals at the DMCC and chairman of the Dubai Gold and Commodities Exchange, said: "Gold is increasingly seen as a sound investment tool and as a hedge against inflation.

"It is only appropriate then, that Dubai should launch its own official gold coin, which will be truly representative of its leading role in the economy of the region."

He explained that the "well-designed" coins, which will be available in the market in September, will be marketed towards the millions of travellers who visit Dubai every year.
