Greece outlines mining future

Tuesday, 22nd May 2007 (2506 views)

Gold mining company Frontier Pacific has announced an agreement with Greek government to increase the number of projects in the country.

Speaking of the union, Nikos Stephenou, general secretary of the ministry of development in Greece explained that mining and metallurgical industries were "fundamental pieces of the well-being of the Greek economy" and that the development of mining projects in the country is of utmost importance.

He claimed that, within the European Union, Greece is one of the countries hoping to increase its significant mining business and exports of mineral products, rather than concentrate on imports from southern hemisphere countries.

"In a Europe with limited current mining potential and a complex set of restricting laws, it is logical that the mining production does not receive enough support versus the support given to the actual trading of metals and minerals and its importation from non-European countries such as Africa, Australia and India," he said.

He added that sustainable development, the importance of the environment, quality of life for residents and workers, safety and social welfare and a new, human centric approach, was the way forward for the Greek mining industry.
