Rio Narcea pours first gold soonFriday, 25th May 2007 (2244 views) Rio Narcea Gold Mines has completed its gold commissioning at its project in Mauritania and anticipates that its first gold pour at the project will occur very soon, reports Mineweb. The Tasiast project is located just 300 kilometres north of Nouakchott, which is Mauritania’s capital city. The mine which the firm is working on is expected to produce some 50,000 ounces of gold in the second half of this year and it is mined using simple open pit mining techniques. So far the firm has estimates for production during the first eight years of the mine’s life and these total 108,000 ounces at a grade of 3.25 grams of gold per tonne with a recovery rate of 94 per cent. A second diamond drilling rig has been installed at the property so that the Pidment Central ore body, a prominent part of the claim, can be explored because there is thought to be a high-grade area of gold mineralization at 160 metres of depth.
