Mining safety campaign launchedThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Friday, 25th May 2007 (5881 views) A South African mining group has launched a new campaign in order to impress upon mineworkers and managers the importance of adhering to safety rules and regulations. The South Deep gold mine is looking to prevent fall of ground (FOG) fatalities from occurring in particular as part of its campaign. The group has created a mock underground mining operation at the entrance of the mine to remind workers of the potential dangers facing them, as well as to refresh their memories on what a safe working environment looks like. According to the group, FOG fatalities accounted for almost half (48 per cent) of all fatalities in the gold sector in the last financial year. Commenting on the campaign, South Deep vice president Gordon Thompson, said that FOG fatalities were "distressing" because they are "absolutely and entirely preventable". In order to prevent such activities from occurring, Mr Thompson told Mining Weekly the group had to "integrate safety into every action that we take and every decision that we make".
