A gold bathtub weighing 80 kg has been stolen from a resort hotel in Japan, leaving local police at a loss as to how the crime occurred.

Japanese police claim that there are no signs that the weighty bath - which is made of 18-carat gold and is worth 120 million yen (£500,000) -had been dragged on the floor.

Furthermore, the golden tub was situated on the tenth floor of the hotel in Kamogawa and located in a shared bathroom where it was chained to the door which itself was kept locked while not in use.

"The door to the room had been locked with chains, but the chains were found cut off this morning," a police spokesman said.

"We really don't know how this happened at this stage. But what we can assume now is that more than one person was involved in this incident."

The gold bath had been available for use between 15:00 and 18:00 local time by guests up until the theft and a reported 100,000 bathers have made use of it, according to the Kominato Hotel Mikazuki website.
