The Mining Association of Canada's (Mac) recent commitment to sustainable mining signifies the industry's new, balanced approach to biodiversity, it has been claimed.

Mac's Towards Mining and Biodiversity Policy Framework, released earlier this month, included a declaration that World Heritage Sites are 'no go' areas for mining companies.

Pierre Gratton, vice-president of sustainable development and public affairs for the Mining Association of Canada, told the Kenora Daily Miner and News that the profession is changing.

"Part of it is an evolution, part of it is a statement of values and a recognition that there are places in the world that we should not go," he said.

The report also quotes international programmes advisor for Parks Canada, John Pinkerton, as saying that the mining industry has "to be able to grow, but we have to be green as well".

Part of Mac's Towards Sustainable Mining initiative, the framework was described as an "important step" by John Herity, director of the Canada Office of IUCN, the world conservation union.
