The potential for gold discovery and production in Haiti is looking up, it has been claimed.

According to The Star, in the past mining companies have for the most part avoided exploring for gold in Haiti due to its unstable political climate, however, thanks to a newly elected government, the newspaper claims that geologists have returned to the gold-rich country.

Keith Laskowski is one such geologist who has been searching for gold in the hills above La Miel in northeastern Haiti.

The newspaper notes that following a sharp increase in the price of gold and the new government, a change in the future of gold mining in Haiti could be in the offing.

"These are the best results I've ever seen, I don't think there's a question of whether there's a good deposit here. It's a question of whether we can develop it here in Haiti," Mr Laskowski of Vancouver-based company Eurasian Minerals told the newspaper.

According to a United Nations study in the 1970s Haiti could have many gold deposits.

Haiti is also rich in bauxite, copper, calcium carbonate and marble, all of which could be exploited should gold mining in the troubled country perform well.
