The International Gold Panning Championships has taken place in Canada's Edmonton.

As part of the ten-day Capital EX event, the competition reportedly invited experts and novices to go for gold - which in this case was a winning prize of $1,000 (£493.90).

Veteran gold panner Rod Scott won the coveted title in the adult's championship, while ten-year-old Jori Kellow emerged triumphant in the youth category, reports the Edmonton Sun.

"They're the up-and-coming gold panners," organiser Roger Page told the publication.

"As the older ones move on, they need to be replaced."

Formerly known as Klondike Days, the exhibition is held annually at the end of July in Edmonton and adopted the theme of the Klondike gold rush in 1962.

During the exhibition's first four days, 275,911 people were in attendance, according to the organisers.

The Klondike Gold Rush began in the late 19th century after gold was discovered by a team led by Skookum Jim Mason.
