The Ontario Mining Association (OMA) has initiated a "direct link" with Skills Canada Ontario, the organisation has announced.

Through the partnership, OMA is to work with the non-profit organisation to educate Canadian students about opportunities in the skilled trades, the association's website reports.

Under the banner of the Education and Outreach Committee, OMA is to encourage young people to explore the possibility of mining as a career opportunity.

According to OMA, more than 600,000 students receive assistance from Skills Canada Ontario, which initiates schemes through partnerships with industry, government, academia and labour facilities.

Meanwhile, the Canadian mining sector is said to be seeking some 80,000 highly skilled workers over the coming decade.

Founded in 1989, Skills Canada Ontario attempts to promote professional opportunities in the skilled trades to young people in the region.

In related news, a recent report in Mondaq claimed that the Canadian mining industry has played an important role in setting the agenda for corporate social responsibility in the sector.
