Paralympic gold medallist Tanni Grey-Thompson has named gold her favourite Welsh treasure for a new programme, it has emerged.

The sports personality is to be seen extolling the virtues of the precious metal in a forthcoming BBC production, according to the Western Mail.

To mark the centenary of the National Museum of Wales, stars have been asked to name their favourite item, place or building for the programme, entitled National Treasures.

And Grey-Thompson picked gold as her choice for the most important treasure to originate in the country.

"You get to find out interesting features of the celebrities' personalities, like their hobbies and beliefs that you would never normally find out" series producer Sian Pari Huws told the news provider.

Other famous faces to be features on the programme include Catatonia's Cerys Matthews, who named the Welsh nursing blanket siol fagu as her prized artefact, while frontman for The Alarm Mike Peters cited the Welsh triple harp as his choice for the best treasure the country has yielded.

Tanni Grey-Thompson was born in Cardiff in 1969 and has been awarded an OBE for services to sport.
