Gold 'at heart of sports competitions'The news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Tuesday, 31st July 2007 (1787 views) The centrality of gold to the acknowledgement of sporting achievement has been emphasised by a sector organisation.According to the Ontario Mining Association (OMA), the global tradition of awarding gold medals to the top achievers in sports competitions is evidence of the integral nature of mining to the industry. The OMA asks on its website: "Without mining, how would excellence in sport be acknowledged and rewarded?" Gold, as well as silver and bronze, carries a "global symbolism" that can be reflected on during worldwide competitions such as the recent Pan American Games in Brazil and the Federation of International Football Associations Under 20 World Cup in Toronto, the organisation asserts. Don Lindsay, president and chief executive officer of medals provider Teck Cominco, told the organisation: "The Olympic and Paralympic medals inspire people everywhere to realize their full potential, in whatever they do. "We are proud to supply the gold, silver and bronze for the medals that are the source of such inspiration for the world." Teck Cominco is to supply gold, silver and bronze medals at the forthcoming Winter Olympics. Headquartered in Vancouver, the company has pledged its commitment to environmentally sustainable mining.
