Improved safety standards in Ontario's mining industry have resulted in a reduction in Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) premiums for the second year running, it has been claimed.

According to the Ontario Mining Association (OMA), the WSIB's announcement that premiums for its members will be reduced by 4.3 per cent on average in 2008 is a result of improved safety performance in the region's mines.

It has remarked that fewer injuries and improved claims management has lowered the costs for its members.

"The safety record of mining continues to move in the right direction," the OMA stated, citing a 25 per cent improvement in safety between the first six months of 2006 and the corresponding period of 2007, as well as 11 per cent improvement in the medical injury rate over the same period.

However, the OMA added that "no one in the industry would consider resting on their laurels", as continued effort is needed to maintain these standards.

The WSIB provides a compensation system for employers and employees in Ontario and oversees safety in the province.
