Friday, 21st September 2007 (1740 views) Pilgrim's Rest is preparing to host the annual South African Gold Panning Championships, according to BuaNews.The weekend of competition will take place between September 21st and 23rd in the historic gold mining town. According to the South African news service, participants in the timed competition are required to sift through a bucket of sand with a pan and muddy water to find as many hidden gold nuggets as possible The chief judge is the only person who knows how many nuggets are hidden in the buckets and participants in the open competition are penalised if any of the gold nuggets go missing. The event is jointly hosted by the South African Gold Panning Association and the Mpumalanga department of culture, sport and recreation. South Africa is one of 20 nations that participate in the annual World Gold Panning Championships, which are held in a different global location each year. The next world championships are scheduled to take place in Navelgas, Spain in 2008.
