Monday, 24th September 2007 (3138 views) New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark has announced that the country's government will invest NZ$1.8 million (£660,880) into an "interactive tourism experience" at the Waihi gold mine. The proposed Waihi Gold Discovery Centre is a joint NZ$20 million venture between the New Zealand government, local councils and mine owners and is designed to attract more tourists to the area. "Waihi has a strong identity based on its rich gold mining heritage, as well as on its stunning natural features," Prime Minister Clark said. "This centre will tell the stories of the district's heritage to international and domestic visitors alike," she added. Interactive exhibitions at the centre will focus on the historic discovery of gold in the region and the current gold mining industry through audio, film and hands-on working exhibits. The New Zealand government anticipates that the uniquely designed underground facility will provide over 50 new jobs within the next five years and bring NZ$13.5 million of tourist-generated income to the region each year.
