Monday, 24th September 2007 (1754 views) The rush for gold that took place in Johannesburg in the 19th century played an important role in its development, a new report suggests.In an interview in the Star to mark Heritage Day in South Africa, Pieter Grobler, a game ranger at the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve near Johannesburg, said that the city's early history was defined by the gold rush. "White farmers and black farmers farmed together - there was no time for racism," he told the publication, describing that period. Heritage Day, witnessed annually in South Africa on September 24th, sees residents of the nation remember the cultural and religious diversity that has influences its development. To mark the day, residents of the country gathered to celebrate the theme of Celebrating Our Poetry, in reference to which acting president Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri commented that the art is important to nations remembering the past and reclaiming history.
