Tuesday, 25th September 2007 (1845 views) Sustainability in the mining industry was one of the issues discussed at the most recent Annual Mines Ministers' Conference in Whistler, Canada.Key areas to which ministers pledged their commitment at the conference included regulatory performance, skills development, technological research, geoscience and Aboriginal engagement. According to Natural Resources Canada, the minerals and metals industry contributed some $40 billion (£19.9 billion) to the country's gross domestic product and 369,000 jobs in 2006. Gary Lunn, minister of natural resources, noted that the sector continues to display "impressive" performance. "It is only by working together that governments, communities, Aboriginal peoples and industry can continue to benefit from a strong and sustainable Canadian mining sector," he remarked. At the meeting, ministers agreed that integration between government, communities and industry is an essential factor in the sustainability of mining. Attendees also pledged to support existing and new environmental regulations. The Annual Mines Ministers' Conference enables federal, provincial and territorial mines ministers and stakeholders to discuss the future of the sector in Canada.
