Tuesday, 25th September 2007 (1729 views) California's tourism industry is boosted by its gold-plated history, according to a new report.Visitors to San Francisco can relive its heritage by panning for gold in the local streams, the Modesto Bee reports. Guides are said by the publication to know enough about the area's gold rush past to enhance the activity with some nuggets of knowledge. Meanwhile, Sierra Nevada's Mother Lode -a 100-mile-long vein of gold and quartz - continues to entice fans of the precious metal, the publication states. Gold-panning tours abound in the area, with the most prominent discovery in recent times said to be a nugget worth $6,000. Elsewhere, the report cites Highway 49 as a central point for tourists wishing to explore the mining history of the golden state. "The possibility of gold still has the power to work up a crowd," the Modesto Bee points out. The precious metal was first discovered in California in 1848.
