Alaska gold claims to be National Heritage Area? The news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Wednesday, 26th September 2007 (1736 views) The valleys of Alaska's Matanuska-Susitna Borough are looking to be deemed a National Heritage Area, with the area's gold claims a key aspect of this bid, it has been reported.According to the Anchorage Daily News, Matanuska-Susitna Borough has accepted a £16,500 (£8,194) community grant to garner local support for the bid, which if successful could boost tourism in the region. A central feature of the borough's attempt to receive National Heritage status is the gold claims of Hatcher Pass and Trapper Creek, which together with Sutton's coal mines and Palmer's potato fields represent the region's historic worth, the report indicates. Bonnie Quill, director of the Mat-Su Convention and Visitors Bureau, told the news provider: "Any kind of historical or cultural or scenic designation draws people to it. "It gets more attention in guidebooks - and tour operators, they want to be taking their visitors to special places." The US National Park Service states that a National Heritage Area is a place deemed by the United States Congress to combine cultural, natural, historic and recreational resources in a cohesive, distinctive landscape that has grown due to patterns of human activity shaped by geography.
