Founders' Day in California's Colfax is to bring fund for the county's residents in the form of gold panning, it has been reported.

Families are being invited to try their luck at panning for the precious metal as the area remembers its heritage on Saturday September 29th, reports the Colfax Record.

The Railroad Days festival recognises when the county was founded in 1810 through a number of activities recreating the state's heyday.

As well as gold panning, visitors can get involved in quilting, tomahawk throwing and gunny sack races.

Meanwhile, event co-chair Nancy Hagman is reportedly looking for people who remember important moments in Colfax's past - although she'll be lucky to find someone old enough to remember the gold rush.

Many of the contests and games involved in the event are being set up by the Colfax Historical Society.

Located in the Sierra Foothills of California, Colfax celebrates Founders' Day every September.
