Breakwater Resources, a Toronto-based gold producer, has committed to a mine rehabilitation project, the Ontario Mining Association (OMA) has announced.

The company has agreed to contribute $30,000 annually to the OMA's partnership project with the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines Rehabilitation Partnership Project.

According to the OMA, the initiative - a joint endeavour between industry and the government of Canada - has made "significant progress" in countering the effects of abandoned mine sites.

The next venture said by the association to be pursued by the project is to be the Tailings Seeps Relocation Project, which will see some 25,000 cubic metres of tailings removed from drainage spots near the Kamiskotia River.

Due to the funding provided by Breakwater Resources, together with additional funds from new member Xstrata Nickel and current contributor CVRD Inco, the OMA states that it is looking to cover half of the operation's costs with funds from member companies.

Breakwater Resource's gold producing mines include the El Toqui project in Chile and the Myra Falls mine in British Columbia.
