Alaska cruise recreates gold rushTuesday, 20th November 2007 (1152 views) A new cruise aims to take voyagers on a trip back in time to revisit the original gold boom.Voyagers onboard Carnival Cruises' new Last Frontier seven-night trip explores Alaska, guided by the theme of gold discovery. Onboard Carnival Spirit, passengers learn about Alaska's history and take part in activities including gold panning, wilderness walks and dog sled rides. Beginning by heading through Prince William Sound, College fjord and the Chugach National Forest, the journey progresses to historic gold rush town Skagway, which features authentic saloons and early 20th century architecture. Other destinations taken in on the voyage include Ketchikan and Inside Passage, where wildlife including puffins, sea lions, otters, deer, moose, bears and eagles can be witnessed. According to website Alaska's Gold Theme, two key dates in Alaska's gold rush were 1849, when the precious metal was discovered by a Russian mining engineer on the Kenai Peninsula and 1914, when gold was found in Livengood, near Fairbanks.
