"Scores" of Malaysian villagers are combing a beach in the country after a reported discovery of gold deposits one week ago.

Housewives and children are among the prospectors, who are searching through the sand with flashlights at night, according to police officers in the area.

Zulhadnan Salehuddin, a villager living near the Kampung Seri Pantai beach, told reporters that the gold hunt escalated after rumour that some people had discovered gold by panning through the sand, according to China View.

"It is amazing that we can find all these (sic) gold on the beach, without digging or mining," he said.

Police in the area have also commented on the gold-panning frenzy.

"People are really excited," Harun Idris, the district police chief, told the Associated Press.

The Mersing district in Malaysia's southern Johor state, where the beach is located, has been the site of natural gold deposit discoveries in recent years. The beach is about eight kilometres away from the town centre of Mersing.
