Sea of Gold exhibition underwayThursday, 22nd November 2007 (1144 views) The National Museum of Damascus is currently running an exhibition of gold pieces discovered across Syria.Entitled Sea of Gold, the event encapsulates the country's rich tradition of gold discoveries and is a chance for spectators to see a number of rare items, reports Xinhua. Among the pieces on display are gold swan heads dating back to the second millennium BC, which were discovered in a royal tomb in the city of Homs. A gold necklace dating from the same period is also on display, as well as gold ornaments discovered at Mari, an ancient site located on the Euphrates in eastern Syria. Events guide What's On When notes that the National Museum of Damascus houses many of the city's archaeological relics, including clay tablets of the oldest alphabet in the world. The capital of Syria is said to be attractive to visitors who enjoy its famed cuisine and vibrant bazaars.
