Gold metal detectors "a national treasure"Friday, 23rd November 2007 (1218 views) Gold treasure hunters are an important part of Britain's cultural heritage, according to the Times.According to a new article in the newspaper, Britons who develop an interest in the hobby tend to be motivated by historical interest rather than the prospect of financial gain. Metal detecting clubs were advised and potential gold-finders were warned that inexperienced cleaning may damage valuable items. The comments came after the British Museum released a report showing that members of the public unearthed 58,290 archaeological artefacts over the past 12 months. More than three-quarters of these objects were found with the aid of metal detectors, while the rest were uncovered by chance. The Treasure Act of 1996 states that finders have a legal obligation to report objects made of gold and other precious metals more than 300 years old. Meanwhile, a man using a metal detector in Wales recently found a gold touch-piece from the 17th century, it emerged this week.
