A gold coin dating from the 14th century has been found by a 60-year-old man in Scunthorpe, it has emerged.

According to the Scunthorpe Telegraph, Ken Jacobs - who is the chairman of the regional metal detectors' club – discovered the gold coin in a farmer's field near Winteringham.

The coin, a 23-carat gold noble, measures 32 millimetres and has been called a "fantastic find" by staff at the North Lincolnshire Museum, where it is currently being placed on the UK's Portable Antiquities Scheme.

Mr Jacobs told the newspaper that he currently has no plans to sell the gold coin, but the local farmer would receive half of the profits if he was to change his mind.

"It is a rule within metal detecting that the local landowner gets half of anything we sell from what we find on their land," he said, adding that he was "ecstatic" to make the discovery.

Earlier this month, the Portable Antiquities Scheme held a press event at the British Museum in London, where a coin specialist announced that 58,000 historical objects and coins were reported last year.
