A unique gold coin from South Africa has found its way into a red Salvation Army kettle, the latest in a series of anonymous gold coin donations made to support the charity campaign across the United States.

The quarter-ounce gold Krugerrand, valued at more than $250 (£120), was found in a red kettle outside an Omaha K-mart store, according to Fox news station KPTM.

It is thought that the coin is the first of its kind to be donated in the Nebraska city in more than ten years and has been "a wonderful surprise", a Salvation Army spokesperson said.

"It's the ultimate expression about caring about others, that's what the campaign is all about."

The city's Action 3 News reported that the Salvation Army first discovered a South African coin donation in a red kettle in 1982.

It is estimated that the Salvation Army Red Kettle Christmas initiative has raised $1 million since launching earlier this month.
