Philippines mines receive environmental recognition

Friday, 30th November 2007 (1106 views)

The Philippines government has highlighted 20 mines in the country for their outstanding performance in the fields of environmental management, safety programmes and forestation.

The recently held 54th Annual Mine Safety and Environment Conference (ANMSEC) saw gold and other projects in the Philippines acknowledged for their success in these areas of sustainable operations, reports bayanihan dot org.

Lito Atienza, the environment and natural resources secretary, said that the recognition was intended to emphasise the government's commitment to developing a mining industry successful not only financially but in the social and environmental sphere also.

Mr Atienza, the chief of the country's department of the environment and natural resources, gave awards to companies including Philex Mining and Padcal Mine.

Other projects were recognised as recipients of the Best Mining Forest Awards and the Safest Mines Awards.

Mr Atienza said: "It is only fitting that we also recognise the initiative of the private sector and exemplary performance of the individual mines and quarries in the protection of the environment, its own people and the communities around them, as well as in social development."

He recently commented that indigenous peoples would benefit from reforms taking place in the country's gold mining sector, the news provider reported.
