Gold jewellery minted to look like Soviet Union-era coins is becoming a popular trend among young Moscow residents, according to the New York Times.

The jewellery, created by fashion designer Denis Simachev, is part of a collection of nostalgic items representative of the Soviet Union during the height of its superpower status.

Other designs in the collection are shirts featuring an embroidered Soviet coat of arms and overcoats which fasten with hammer-and-sickle buttons.

Mr Simachev said the designs are intended to celebrate the country's heritage and that younger adults in the country associate the symbolism he uses in his designs with happy childhood memories.

"People in their 30s see these kinds of symbols as reminders of happy memories, like going to pioneer camp where they lived together, ate breakfast together and played sports," he told the New York Times.

Claiming to create "European-quality designed products with a Russian spirit," the Denis Simachev collection is available exclusively from his Moscow boutique, which doubles as a nightclub on weekend evenings.
