Friday, 28th December 2007 (1809 views) Gold coins have featured strongly in the opening ballots of the Coin of the Year award, which judges 2006-dated coins across ten different categories.According to Numismaster.com, a gold coin from Finland - a five-curo coin, KM-123 - was among the pieces vying for the Most Inspirational category. The coin commemorates the 150th anniversary of Aland Island's demilitarisation. In the Best Gold Coin category, the winning piece came from Austria. The nation's 100 coin, KM-3136, which is decorated with an image of the Vienna River Gate, was found to be the top choice in the category. A gold 10 coin from France, depicting Jules Verne's Five Weeks in a Balloon, was named best crown, with the KM-1450 released on the 100th anniversary of the well-respected author's death. These coins will now feature in the running for a further award, the People's Choice prize, which will be voted for online. According to the website, the award will be presented at next year's World Money Fair in Berlin, which will run from February 1st to the 3rd.
